My 1998 Expedition was stolen out of Mass. and was recovered in NJ 6 weeks later..The police in NJ called and said it was totaled, the man who owns the yard where it was towed said it was totaled...the steering wheel is gone, the windows are broken, profanities are scratched onto the outside of the vehicle...they both said it's a mess..We don't know what damage was done to the engine, sugar in the gas tank and so on..The Ins. Co. sent an adjuster out from NJ, didn't hear anything until I get a check in the mail for $4000 to me and the bank from Safety Ins. Co. They want to tow it back to Mass. and I am supposed to pick a shop on their list and have it fixed..When I called the policeman in NJ to tell him , he was stunned..He feels the Co. is trying to pull a fast one on me..What should I do? I don't know what my rights are and the Ins. Co. is pressuring me to pick a place in the next day or two..This doesn't seem fair..I owe $17,000 on the vehicle.. I never did anything with the check they sent me . Thanks for any help....
