Salvage is the part of a loss that is saved (the value of such part). In claiming a total loss you cannot claim the part which is saved that you keep.

You say the total loss value that your insurance company set seems fair, yet you also say you end up losing $400. Perhaps the total loss amount needs a closer look. You may want to check market value with dealers, blue book and newspapers, for a vehicle in pre-accident similar condition. If you find that the value of your vehicle is more than you are being allowed, claim filing information can be found at:
