Total Loss or not?

I just got a 2002 Acura TL Type-S about 3 months ago. Approx. 7500 miles on it by last night.

I was hit, not at fault, by another car who was hit by a driver running a red light. My car has damage to the drivers rear suspension(wheel bent inward), drivers front wheel(wheel slightly pushed in toward the engine bay), both driver side doors and fenders are crushed.

Would it be better to go for a total loss settlement?

Also if I want to pursue a total loss settlement, how do rub things the correct way to make it happen? I have filed a claim with my own insurance company but also have the option of filing with the 3rd party's company instead.

Someone I know told me to beware of getting a "salvaged title" at the DMV.
