steve, look to your contract with aaa. Most policies have clause that allows
them to charge betterment on parts that wear....otherwise the insured would
actually be better off with new parts replacing old parts....not the intent
of insurance.
: AAA Michigan is charging "betterment" for replacement
: engine parts (pistons, crankshaft, etc.) I found
: something on the internet that refered to WAC 248-30-
: 390(8) (see http://www.wa.gov/ins/library/96-1.HTML).
: It indicates that betterment/depreciation are only
: permitted for parts normally subject to repair and
: replacement during the useful life of the car. It goes
: on to say that the deductions are limited to the "amount
: the resale value of the vehicle is increased by the
: repair or replacement."
: Is that regulation specific to Washington state, or is
: it nationwide?
: My car is a 10 year old Acura Legend. The pistons and
: crankshaft are not normally subject to repair and
: replacement. In any case, since the engine has only
: 59K miles, the new parts do not add to the market value
: of the car. The engine already had far more useful
: life than the rest of the car.
: Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
